Heritage Open Days aim to celebrate culture and the arts across the breadth of England championing the nation’s rich heritage. Roald Dahl weekend at Seven Stories coincides with the national initiative – Heritage Open Day – which has been operating for nearly twenty years. Seven Stories has a holding of items in their archival collection including letters between Roald Dahl and illustrators he worked with such as Faith Jacques as well as draft material and correspondence relating to the play adaptation of The Witches by David Wood. The dark humour employed by Dahl to create imaginative, bizarre and often toe-curlingly gruesome characters has remained popular across the generations. Roald Dahl wrote prolifically throughout his life, famously working alongside critically acclaimed illustrator Quentin Blake and both celebrated as pivotal contributors within the field of Children’s Literature. Roald Dahl was born on Septemin Wales, and raised by his mother after his father tragically died. Since The Witches was first published 30 years ago, there have been countless adaptations of the classic for theatre, screen and radio including a film starring Angelica Houston released the year of Dahl’s death in 1990. Fans of Dahl’s work are encouraged to come along for the weekend dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl character for the chance to win some squiffingly good prizes. Visitors are invited to create their own scary witch mask, add to Seven Stories’ Book of Spells and make witch claws all inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic novel. This year marks the book’s 30 year anniversary and to celebrate this legacy, Seven Stories will be opening its doors to Roald Dahl fans for a wicked weekend of craft and stories.
